Position Summary:
Plans, coordinates and directs the residents in activity program. Arranges for use of community facilities, recruits, orientates and supervises the volunteer program of the home. Also provides necessary documentation.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Organizes a program of both individual and group activities based on the needs of the residents. A balance of recreational activities including physical, social, religious, arts, and crafts, diversified and intellectual is preferred.
  • The Activity program shall also include:
    • Resident’s council at least once a month.
    • Reality orientation on a one to one basis and night and weekend functions as needed.
  • Supervises beauty parlor and barber activities. Technicians may be either volunteer or paid hairdressers.
  • Responsible for identifying and documenting activity interest, needs and problems of the resident in the activity component of the resident assessment. Subsequent progress notes and care planning updates will be documented as the resident’s condition changes but no less than quarterly.
  • Completes an assessment of each resident’s activities within 14 days of admission. This is the activity component of the MDS used for the comprehensive assessment of each resident.
  • Develops the activity component of the Comprehensive Care Plan from the completed activity assessment within 7 days of completing the assessment. The plan must be developed within the level approved by the resident’s attending physician and must encourage the resident to return to normal activities and self-care.
  • Attend all health care conferences and updates the activities component of the Comprehensive Care Plan in combination with the resident assessment but no less than once each quarter
  • Re-assesses each resident every 12 months on the activity components of the resident assessment.
  • Participates in community planning related to the interest of the facility and arranges for use of community facilities.
  • Recruits, orientates, and supervises the volunteer program for the facility.
  • Trains and encourages all staff to support the activity program.
  • Supervises any assistants under his/her direction.
  • Takes residents to and from activities, assists on and off the vans, buses or other transportation and assist residents to walk, pivot as needed.
  • Will participate in the facility Quality Assurance Program as directed by the Administrator
  • Other duties for department heads- manager of day, tours, grievances, dining room duty.
  • Is a qualified Therapeutic Recreation specialist or an activities professional who is:
· Licensed or registered if applicable by the state in which practicing
· Eligible for certification as a Therapeutic Recreation specialist, therapeutic Recreation Assistant or an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body such as the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
  • Is a qualified Occupational Therapist or occupational Therapy Assistant or
  • Has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, 1 year of which was full time in a resident activities program in a health care setting
  • Completed an Activity Director training course, DHS and TDH accept only training courses approved by the Recreation Society.
Must complete 8 hours of approved continuing education or equivalent continuing education units each year. Approval bodies include organizations or associations recognized as such by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or Certified Activity Professional or Registered Occupational Therapist.
